hydraulic bypass

1. n. [Well Workover and Intervention]

A design feature on packers and similar downhole tools that occupy a large proportion of the drift diameter of the wellbore. When running and retrieving such tools, the hydraulic bypass allows the wellbore fluid to flow through part of the tool assembly to reduce the forces applied to the tool and reduce any damaging swab or surge effect on the reservoir formation.
